Wastewater Treatment in Tomorrow’s Climate Change Driven World
A Joint Workshop Provided by WEF and AAEE

Saturday, October 18, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
1 day, 0.6 CEUs

The scope and pace of climate change issues make these challenges categorically different from every other challenge previously faced by the wastewater industry.   It is imperative that water and wastewater professionals become well informed now so they can mitigate impacts and adapt to global climate change.

This workshop will provide the participant with the fundamentals of climate change, regulatory/legislative background at both the federal and state/regional levels, assessment of wastewater-related greenhouse gas emissions, mitigation of emissions, adaptation to changes caused by global climate change, design approaches and case studies and finally research gaps.  The workshop will wrap up with an interactive session in which the participants will provide their views on future mitigation and adaptation efforts within the wastewater industry.

The presenters include professionals who are currently leading the wastewater community in various aspects of this still developing arena.  This venue presents a rare opportunity to have assembled these experts in one event.

The topics to be discussed are: an overview of climate change and its impacts on the wastewater industry, federal and state legislation/regulation; the impacts on and the role of wastewater treatment in climate change, mitigation and adaptation; the opportunities/challenges that exist for wastewater treatment, design, operation and research, and, the future direction for wastewater treatment plant owners/operators – how to build on today success stories.

Using an approach that incorporates the entire scope of the workshop topics, the participants will be challenged with a problem that addresses cost-effective mitigation and adaptation strategies.  An open exploration of the solutions reached will conclude the program.
